Minnows suffer comprehensive defeats at World Cup

There was no repeat of Ireland’s famous Cupset at the ICC World Cup on Friday as both Zimbabwe and Bangladesh suffered heavy losses at the hands of New Zealand and West Indies respectively.

For Zimbabwe, none of the batsmen barring opener Brendan Taylor and all rounder Prosper Utseya were unable to get going in Ahmedabad, and the Eagles could only manage a paltry total of 162. Unfortunately, the efforts of their lower order went in vain as the Kiwis reached the target without losing a single wicket. Dashing opener Brendon McCullum and his partner, the lanky Martin Guptill, were not really troubled by the Zimbabwe bowlers and the Black Caps romped home with plenty to spare.

Bangladesh, playing in front of a capacity crowd at Mirpur, produced one of their poorest ever performances as they were shot out for 58 in under fifteen overs. It was the lowest ever World Cup total by a full member of the ICC, with only Junaid Siddique and Mohammed Ashraful getting into double figures. The Windies, as one might have expected, reached the target with ease, with the whole match taking a little over 30 overs to complete, much to the anger of the crowd gathered at Mirpur.
